REQUIRED TOOLS AND CLEANERS
Certain cleaners must be used to clean each of the computer
components. There are many companies that manufacture chemical
cleaners for computers and electronic equipments. A few well
known companies are:
Chemtronics
Rawn Company
LPS Chemical products
G.C. Thorsen
If you visit your local or nearest electronics supplies store (not
Radio Shack ) you will see their products displayed in the
cleaning supplies section. Some of the cleaners you'll see on
display are:
1- TF SOLVENT
The best electronic circuit board cleaners are made from 100% TF
solvent. TF solvent is a mild high purity cleaner and degreaser
which is ideal for cleaning sensitive equipment and precision
instruments. It is used to clean all types of computers,
calculators, VCRs, VTR equipment, office equipment, PC boards,
negatives, movie films and any other equipment that requires a
safe no residue cleaner. It is known as the safest degreasing
solvent available for computers.
TF solvent is safe on plastics and all metals. It removes dirt,
soil, and leaves no residue. It is non-flammable, and non-toxic.
You can use it safely to clean all computer boards including main
boards, expansion cards, and all the internal circuitry of
computers. It comes depending on the manufacturer in aerosol cans
in the following sizes: 8 oz., 12 oz., 16 oz., 20 oz., and 24 oz.
It is also available in liquid form as 8 oz, 16 oz, 1 gallon, 5
gallon, and 55 gallons. The liquid TF solve can be used with swabs
or cloths as a general purpose cleaners for all the equipment
listed above.
2- GAS DUSTERS
Gas dusters are essential for cleaning applications where liquid
solvents are not appropriate. They remove dust, lint, and foreign
particles from electrical, electronic, optical, and office
equipment with a burst of dry inert gas. They are totally dry and
leave no residue.
The best ones are composed of a reusable valve assembly and a
refill can (12 oz. or 20 oz. ). Some of them include a 36"
extension hose that attaches to the valve nozzle. This allows for
cleaning of the most inaccessible areas. Dusters are available
from electronic supply stores, computer houses and photography
stores.
3- SWABS
Swabs are made of highly absorbent materials and are usually used
with some liquid cleaner to clean, and remove oxides and soils
from computers, VTRs, VCRs, and the magnetic tapes.
Some types of swabs for example, such as Chemswab by Chemtronics,
come presaturated with isopropyl alcohol. They are used to clean
the area between keyboard keys.
4- PADS OR WIPERS
Pads are available presaturated and ready to use as a general
purpose cleaning of computers and other equipments. CHEMPAD (made
by Chemtronics) is very effective in removing ink and grease.
5- GLASS CLEANERS
Glass cleaners are used for cleaning the CRT (monitor screen). You
may use any general purpose glass cleaner for the CRT or you can
use PLAST-N-GLASS, or SCREEN PREP form Chemtronics. The advantage
of the later cleaners is that they eliminate static charges on the
display screen.
6- OTHER TOOLS AND SUPPLIES
You will need a screwdriver to use for opening the computer case
so that you will be able to clean the inside of the computer. If
you don't want to use the special PADS or WIPERS, you need to buy
some towels and an all purpose cleaner such as 409. A disk drive
cleaning kit is also required to clean disk drive heads.
Most of the cleaners described above are available from your local
electronic supplies store. Some computer stores may carry some of
the cleaners also. Dusters can be found at photography stores.
